Det är oklart om Schisshyttan var bebyggt före 1500-talet. Från 1500-talet tillhörde Schisshyttan tillsammans med Västra Silvberg och Ludvika bruk den kungliga Vasafamiljen. De senaste århundradena stod olika svenska och utländska intressenter som ägare. Ståltillverkningen pågick mellan 1762 och 1874. Hyttverksamheten upphörde 1922.
