Varnhems klosterkyrka byggdes vid mitten av 1200-talet, sedan den gamla kyrkan brunnit. Under 1600-talet fick kyrkan sitt säregna utseende med strävpelare. Birger Jarls grav hittades vid Sigurd Curmans stora restaurering under 1920-talet.
