De äldsta delarna i kyrkan daterar sig från 1100- och 1200-talet. Under årens gång har kyrkans exteriör ändrats flera gånger, senast hände det år 1889. 1719 härjade ryssarna socknen och brände bl a kyrkan. Taket och all inredning förstördes och därtill alla handlingar som berättade om kyrkans forna historia.
