Christian III av Danmark lät bygga fästningen i Landskrona 1549-1559. Anläggningen var kvadratisk och omgiven av en nästan 70 meter bred vallgrav. Den 50 meter långa huvudlängan mot sundet var kraftigt bestyckad. Borgens andra sidor var skyddade av spärrmurar med fyra hörntorn. Citadellet i Landskrona var redan från början avsett som försvarsanläggning och har inte varit tänkt som residens.
