Skansen går även under namnen Westgötha Leijon eller Gullberg Skantz som är den äldsta benämningen. Arbetet påbörjades 1687 och var klart 1694. 1822 upphörde dess försvarsfunktion och blev istället krutförråd. 1942 gick Skansen helt ur militär tjänst och blev 1974 förbundsborg för Götiska Förbundet.
