Stenkolsbolagets disponent Johan Sjöcrona verkade på olika sätt för arbetarnas bästa. År 1853 hade han tagit initiativet till musikkåren, som fick både instrument och dirigent bekostade av bolaget. Tre år senare lät han anlägga en Folkets Trädgård och 1861 det första samlingshuset, ?ett offentligt förlustelseställe för unga och gamla?. 1899 invigdes de om- och tillbyggda lokalerna. Dåvarande disponenten Nordenfeldt betonade att huset skulle ?blifva en länk i förenandet av arbetarnas och arbetsgivarens gemensamma sträfvanden?.
