Den tidigare Tornlyckan uppläts till universitetet 1815 för att man skulle inrätta en "Trädskola för wilda träd" som ett led i att stimulera bönder till att plantera mer träd - en verksamhet som pågick ca 10 år. Då den äldre botaniska trädgården invid Lundagård var tvungen att flytta från sitt centrala läge kunde istället en botanisk trädgård anläggas under 1860-talet under ledning av J G Agardh, på denna mark som redan tillhörde universitetet.
