Zu den wichtigsten Werken des württembergischen Hofbaumeisters Johann Michael Knapp zählen die Ausführung der Jubiläumssäule auf dem Stuttgarter Schlossplatz sowie der gemeinsam mit Christian Friedrich Leins entworfene Königsbau. Das von Ferdinando Rodoni gefertigte Porträt, das Knapp in strenger Frontalansicht im Brustausschnitt zeigt, entstand der Signatur zufolge 1840 in Rom. Der Architekt hielt sich dort zwischen 1819 und 1840 immer wieder zu Studienzwecken auf.
