Joseph Mayr war mit seinem Bruder Andreas imTeam von Johannes Schraudolph zur Domausmalung in den 50er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts nach Speyer gekommen. Er blieb auch nach der Fertigstellung der Arbeiten am Dom in Speyer. Von seiner Hand sind vorwiegend religiöse Darstellungen bekannt. Wie zum Beispiel diese Darstellung der Heiligen Familie. Während der jugendliche Jesus seinem Vater bei der Ausübung seines Schreinerhandwerks zur Hand geht, sitzt seine Mutter am Spinnroggen.
