Marstrand välbevarad stadsmiljö med bevarad medeltida topografi, trähusbebyggelse från 1700-och 1800-tal och starka inslag av badortsanläggningar från 1800-talet. Under 1600-talet började staden befästas, och sedan området blev svenskt uppfördes carlstens fästning. Denna erhöll sitt nuvarande utseende efter en ombyggnad 1834--57 då de mäktiga utanverken i granit tillkom.
